Travel Placement Service keeps a close eye on national employment numbers, and we were interested to see American companies are relying on more temporary workers than at any time since at least the 1980s. That's based on May labor market data, as reported by Bloomberg News.

The number of temp workers grew 8.5 percent between May 2013 and May of this year, according to Bloomberg. Financial analyst Mark Marcon predicts that the number of temporary employment opportunities will only continue to grow.

"Temp help services growth continues to materially outpace overall employment growth," Marcon told the news outlet.

We previously discussed on this blog how temporary corporate travel positions often transition into permanent ones. While many employers currently have more open positions available, some may be more comfortable committing to a temporary worker. If he or she is a good fit, that person may then become a permanent member of the team.

We recommend that even an experienced corporate travel professional keep an open mind and consider a temporary position if it seems like a good fit, especially if they are not currently working. A temporary job can keep you engaged in the industry, help you learn new skills, offer you new networking opportunities and give you increased credibility when interviewing for permanent positions down the road. Many of our job seekers also like the flexibility that temporary work provides.
