At Travel Placement Service we’ve spent years reviewing the resumes of travel professionals across the country, consistently matching them with the industry’s top employers. If you are currently refining your own resume as you prepare to pursue new employment opportunities, it can be hard to know what to keep and what to cut. Here are our top tips for eliminating resume clutter:
Be concise
Even if you’ve been working in the travel industry for a long time, your resume should typically not exceed two pages. If you are a recent graduate or a young professional, stick to just one page. Don’t bother sharing unrelated skills or experience, as they will likely just distract from your relevant qualifications.
Emphasize accomplishments
Many job applicants list the duties they performed in their previous positions, but it is far more compelling to frame your experience in terms of concrete accomplishments. Hiring managers are more likely to take notice of your achievements than of a dry list of professional tasks.
Replace the objective
Many career advisors agree that resume objectives often hurt candidates more than they help them.
“These days, any resume reader assumes that their job is your objective,” writes hiring expert Arnie Fertig in U.S. News and World Report. “Their selection process, however, is not necessarily about fulfilling your wants and wishes. Instead, it is about meeting the employer’s needs.”
Try replacing your resume objective with a short, bulleted list of your most relevant qualifications. This shows managers how you can help solve their problems, rather than the other way around.
